ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether facility-reported staff shortages and total staff levels were independently associated with changes in nursing home (NH) outcomes in 2020. DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 8466 NHs with staffing and outcome data. METHODS: This study used NH COVID-19 Public File (2020), Nursing Home Compare (2019-2020), and Payroll-Based Journal data (2019-2020). Outcome measures included the percentage of long-stay residents in a facility with declines in activities in daily living (ADLs), decreases in mobility, weight loss, and pressure ulcers in 2020 Q2, 2020 Q3, and 2020 Q4. Independent variables were whether NHs reported any shortage of aides or licensed nurses and total staff hours per resident day (HPRD). Separate 2-level (NH, state) Hierarchical Generalized Linear Mixed models examined the association of facility-reported shortages and staff hours with key NH resident outcomes, controlling for NH characteristics and COVID-19 infections. RESULTS: The weekly percentage of NHs reporting any staff shortage averaged 20%. Total staff HPRD increased slightly from 3.7 in 2019 to 3.8 in 2020. Health outcomes were stable during 2019 and 2020 Q1 but worsened substantially starting in 2020 Q2. For example, the percentage of residents with mobility loss increased from 16.2% in 2020 Q1 to 27.9% in 2020 Q4. Facility-reported staff shortages were associated with an increase in the proportion of residents with an ADL decline (0.54 percentage points), mobility loss (0.80 percentage points), weight loss (0.22 percentage points), and pressure ulcers (0.22 percentage points) (all P < .01). Total staff HPRD was not associated with changes in any outcomes (all P > .05). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: NHs reported worsened health outcomes among long-stay residents in 2020, with worse outcomes found among facilities that reported staff shortages but not among those with lower total staff levels. Facility-reported shortages provide important quality information during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is a critical period of fighting against new coronavirus(SARS-CoV-2) disease now,since its outbreak on December 2019 in Wuhan.Even though the front line staffs are thought heroes,the ENT doctors and nurses are also indispensable power in defending the disease.The number of outpatients of ENT is huge.The early stage of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia(COVID-19) may present pharyngalgia or cough without fever.Thus,the ENT doctors have high risks of being consulted by early stage COVID-19 patients.This paper means to talk about the contributions of ENT doctors and nurses in defending against SARS-CoV-2 virus,as well as the mental status of them.

ABSTRACT

In response to the wide-ranging concern of online academic futility, the current study aimed to explore the independent variables and mediating variable from a novel perspective of parents during COVID-19. Based on the social comparison theory and the control-value theory of achievement emotions, social comparison and tutoring anxiety were incorporated into an integrated model as predictors and mediator, respectively. A total of 300 parents completed an online survey. The results of the structural equation modeling indicated that upward social comparison and downward social comparison were both positively related to tutoring anxiety, which in turn positively predicted perceived online academic futility. Notably, tutoring anxiety played a significant mediating role in the association between different social comparison and perceived online academic futility. These results highlight the consistent predictive effect of upward social comparison and downward social comparison on perceived online academic futility, shedding light on the roles of tutoring anxiety in explaining the relationship from parental perspectives.

ABSTRACT

Since the end of 2019, a highly contagious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has deprived numerous lives worldwide, called COVID-19. Up to date, omicron is the latest variant of concern, and BA.5 is replacing the BA.2 variant to become the main subtype rampaging worldwide. These subtypes harbor an L452R mutation, which increases their transmissibility among vaccinated people. Current methods for identifying SARS-CoV-2 variants are mainly based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by gene sequencing, making time-consuming processes and expensive instrumentation indispensable. In this study, we developed a rapid and ultrasensitive electrochemical biosensor to achieve the goals of high sensitivity, the ability of distinguishing the variants, and the direct detection of RNAs from viruses simultaneously. We used electrodes made of MXene-AuNP (gold nanoparticle) composites for improved sensitivity and the CRISPR/Cas13a system for high specificity in detecting the single-base L452R mutation in RNAs and clinical samples. Our biosensor will be an excellent supplement to the RT-qPCR method enabling the early diagnosis and quick distinguishment of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 and BA.2 variants and more potential variants that might arise in the future.

ABSTRACT

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected billions of individuals and is the cause of the current global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We previously developed an mRNA vaccine (LVRNA009) based on the S protein of the Wuhan-Hu-1 strain; the phases I and II clinical trials showed that LVRNA009 has a promising safety and immunogenicity profile. In order to counteract the immune escape by SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, a panel of mRNA vaccines was developed based on the S proteins of the Wuhan-Hu-1, Delta, Omicron BA.1, BA.2, and BA.5 strains, and each vaccine's protective potency against the virus variants was evaluated. Furthermore, to achieve excellent neutralization against SARS-CoV-2 variants, bivalent vaccines were developed and tested against the variants. We found that the monovalent Wuhan-Hu-1 or the Delta vaccines could induce high level of neutralization antibody and protect animals from the infection of the SARS-CoV-2 Wuhan-Hu-1 or Delta strains, respectively. However, serum samples from mice immunized with monovalent Delta vaccine showed relatively low virus neutralization titers (VNTs) against the pseudotyped virus of the Omicron strains. Serum samples from mice immunized with bivalent Delta/BA.1 vaccine had high VNTs against the pseudotyped Wuhan-Hu-1, Delta, and BA.1 strains but low VNTs against BA.2 and BA.5 (p < 0.05). Serum samples from mice immunized with Delta/BA.2 vaccine had high VNTs against the pseudotyped Wuhan-Hu-1, Delta, BA.1 and BA.2 strains but low VNTs against BA.5. Finally, serum samples from mice immunized with Delta/BA.5 vaccine had high VNTs against all the tested pseudotyped SARS-CoV-2 strains including the Wuhan-Hu-1, Delta, and Omicron variants (p > 0.05). Therefore, a bivalent mRNA vaccine with Delta/BA.5 combination is promising to provide broad spectrum immunity against all VOCs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric illness may pose an additional risk of death for older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Older adults in the community versus institutions might be influenced by the pandemic differently. This study examines excess deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic among Medicare beneficiaries with and without psychiatric diagnoses (depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia) in the community versus nursing homes. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of a 20% random sample of 15,229,713 fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries, from January 2019 through December 2021. Unadjusted monthly mortality risks, COVID-19 infection rates, and case-fatality rates after COVID-19 diagnosis were calculated. Excess deaths in 2020, compared to 2019 were estimated from multivariable logistic regressions. RESULTS: Of all included Medicare beneficiaries in 2020 (N = 5,140,619), 28.9% had a psychiatric diagnosis; 1.7% lived in nursing homes. In 2020, there were 246,422 observed deaths, compared to 215,264 expected, representing a 14.5% increase over expected. Patients with psychiatric diagnoses had more excess deaths than those without psychiatric diagnoses (1,107 vs. 403 excess deaths per 100,000 beneficiaries, p < 0.01). The largest increases in mortality risks were observed among patients with schizophrenia (32.4% increase) and bipolar disorder (25.4% increase). The pandemic-associated increase in deaths with psychiatric diagnoses was only found in the community, not in nursing homes. The increased mortality for patients with psychiatric diagnoses was limited to those with medical comorbidities. The increase in mortality for psychiatric diagnoses was associated with higher COVID-19 infection rates (1-year infection rate = 7.9% vs. 4.2% in 2020), rather than excess case fatality. CONCLUSIONS: Excess deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic were disproportionally greater in beneficiaries with psychiatric diagnoses, at least in part due to higher infection rates. Policy interventions should focus on preventing COVID-19 infections and deaths among community-dwelling patients with major psychiatric disorders in addition to those living the nursing homes.

ABSTRACT

Importance: Several studies reported sharp decreases in screening mammography for breast cancer and low-dose computed tomographic screening for lung cancer in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by a return to normal or near-normal levels in the summer of 2020. Objective: To determine the observed vs expected mammography and low-dose computed tomographic scan rates from the beginning of the pandemic through April 2022. Design, Setting, and Participants: In this retrospective cohort study assessing mammography and low-dose computed tomography rates from January 2017 through April 2022, data for January 2016 to February 2020 were used to generate expected rates for the period March 2020 to April 2022. The study included a 20% national sample of Medicare fee-for-service enrollees among women aged 50 to 74 years for mammography, and men and women aged 55 to 79 years for low-dose computed tomographic scan. Main Outcomes and Measures: Receipt of screening mammography or low-dose computed tomographic scan. Results: The yearly cohorts for the mammography rates included more than 1 600 000 women aged 50 to 74 years, and the cohorts for the low-dose computed tomographic scan rates included more than 3 700 000 men and women aged 55 to 79 years. From January 2017 through February 2020, monthly mammography rates were flat, whereas there was a monotonic increase in low-dose computed tomographic scan rates, from approximately 500 per million per month in early 2017 to 1100 per million per month by January 2020. Over the period from March 2020 to April 2022, there were episodic drops in both mammography and low-dose computed tomographic scan rates, coincident with increases in national COVID-19 infection rates. For the periods from March 2020 to February 2020 and March 2021 to February 2022, the observed low-dose computed tomographic scan rates were 24% (95% CI, 23%-24%) and 14% (95% CI, 13%-15%) below expected rates, whereas mammography rates were 17% (95% CI, 17%-18%) and 4% (95% CI, 4%-3%) below expected. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study, the decreases in cancer screening during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic did not resolve after the initial pandemic surges. Successful interventions to improve screening rates should address pandemic-specific reasons for low screening participation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging tick-borne disease with a high fatality rate. How the glucose level might affect the clinical outcome remains obscure. METHODS: A multicenter study was performed in 2 hospitals from 2011 to 2021. Patients with SFTS and acute hyperglycemia (admission fasting plasma glucose [FPG] ≥7 mmol/L), postadmission hyperglycemia (admission FPG <7 mmol/L but FPG ≥7 mmol/L after admission), and euglycemia (FPG <7 mmol/L throughout hospitalization) were compared for their clinical progress and outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 3225 patients were included in this study, 37.9% of whom developed acute hyperglycemia and 7.6% postadmission hyperglycemia. The presence of acute hyperglycemia, with or without known diabetes, was associated with increased risk of death (odds ratio [OR]: 1.63; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.29-2.05) compared with euglycemia. This effect, however, was only determined in female patients (OR: 2.15; 95% CI: 1.54-2.93). Insulin treatment of patients with SFTS and acute hyperglycemia without previous diabetes was associated with significantly increased mortality (OR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.16-2.16). CONCLUSION: Acute hyperglycemia can act as a strong predictor of SFTS-related death in female patients. Insulin treatment of hyperglycemia in patients with SFTS without pre-existing diabetes has adverse effects.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of booster vaccinations on the risk of hospitalization with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and how it varies by enrollee characteristics and interval from the initial vaccination to receipt of a booster. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cohort study used 100% Medicare claims from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2021, and matched 3,940,475 individuals who received boosters to 3,940,475 controls based on week and type of original COVID-19 vaccine and demographic and clinical characteristics. We compared the association of booster vs no booster with COVID-19 hospitalization using Cox proportional hazards regression models controlling for patient characteristics. We also determined the association of time from original vaccine to booster with COVID-19 hospitalization. RESULTS: Over a maximum of 130 days of follow-up, boosted enrollees had 8.20 (95% CI, 7.81 to 8.60) COVID-19 hospitalizations per million days vs 43.70 (95% CI, 42.79 to 44.64) for controls (81% effectiveness). Effectiveness varied by race, prior hospitalizations, and certain comorbidities, for example, leukemia/lymphoma (53% effectiveness), autoimmune disease (73%), and dementia (73%). Boosters received between 6 and 9 months after original vaccination varied between 81% and 85% effectiveness, while boosters received at 5 to 6 months (62%) or less than 5 months (58%) were less effective. CONCLUSION: Boosters are highly effective in the Medicare population. Approximately 69,225 hospitalizations would be prevented by boosters in the 15 million individuals aged 65 years or older currently not boosted in a period similar to the September 2020 through January 2021 period studied. Boosters provided the greatest benefits if they were received between 6 and 9 months following original vaccinations. However, boosters were associated with substantial decreases in COVID-19 hospitalizations in all categories of enrollees.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the treatment of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). METHODS: We retrospectively collected and compared the data of patients with CDH admitted between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021(study group) with the CDH patients admitted before the pandemic between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 (control group). RESULTS: During the pandemic, 41 patients with CDH diagnosed prenatally were transferred to our hospital, and 40 underwent surgical repair. The number of patients treated in our hospital increased by 24.2% compared with the 33 patients before the pandemic. During the pandemic, the overall survival rate, postoperative survival rate and recurrence rate were 85.4%, 87.5% and 7.3%, respectively, and there were no significant differences compared with the control group (75.8%, 83.3% and 9.1%, respectively). The average length of hospital stay in patients admitted during the pandemic was longer than that in the control group (31 days vs. 16 days, P < 0.001), and the incidence of nosocomial infection was higher than that in the control group (19.5% vs. 3%, P = 0.037). CONCLUSIONS: CDH patients confirmed to be SARS-CoV-2 infection-free can receive routine treatment. Our data indicate that the implementation of protective measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with appropriate screening and case evaluation, do not have a negative impact on the prognosis of children.

In particular, the occurrence of COVID-19 highlights the importance of the food safety for the public health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to establish a fast, simple, sensitive, and efficient method for the detection of food safety. In recent years, the upconversion (UC) nanotechnology has been widely used in the field of food detection. The UC fluorescence analysis technology possesses the advantages of ultra-sensitivity detection, non-invasiveness, light stability, etc., and has broad application prospects in the field of food safety. After cladding and surface modification, it can be combined with other substances through a variety of mechanisms, such as electrostatic interaction, thereby expanding its application in the food safety detection. Thus, overall, there is a vital need to evaluate and utilize the potential of UC nanoparticles in the field of rapid detection of food safety.

ABSTRACT

This study explored the effects of both natural and socio-economic factors, such as city size and healthcare capacity, on the spreading of COVID-19 in China's urban population from January 1 to March 5, 2020. Several statistical models and machine learning methods were used to identify the key determinants of the incidence rate of COVID-19. Based on the interpretable machine learning framework, possible nonlinear relationships between incidences and key impact factors were explored. The results showed that the incidence rate of COVID-19 in cities was influenced by several factors simultaneously. Among the factors, the population inflow rate from Wuhan was the factor that showed the highest correlation coefficient(0.43), followed by the population growth rate(0.38). Population migration size, city size and healthcare capacity were the key influencing factors. Nonlinear relationships existed between the key influencing factors and incidence rates. To be specific, the inflow rate from Wuhan had a S-shaped relationship and reaches an asymptote after 2%;the population density had an approximately linear relationship;the per capita GDP showed an evident inverted U curve with the per capita GDP over 100,000 yuan as the inflection point. City development needs to pay more attention to population density control and economic growth in order to bring more health benefits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nearly 4 billion doses of the BNT162b2-mRNA and CoronaVac-inactivated vaccines have been administrated globally, yet different vaccine-induced immunity against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs) remain incompletely investigated. METHODS: We compare the immunogenicity and durability of these two vaccines among fully vaccinated Hong Kong people. FINDINGS: Standard BNT162b2 and CoronaVac vaccinations were tolerated and induced neutralizing antibody (NAb) (100% and 85.7%) and spike-specific CD4 T cell responses (96.7% and 82.1%), respectively. The geometric mean NAb IC50 and median frequencies of reactive CD4 subsets were consistently lower among CoronaVac-vaccinees than BNT162b2-vaccinees. CoronaVac did not induce measurable levels of nucleocapsid protein-specific IFN-γ+ CD4+ T or IFN-γ+ CD8+ T cells compared with unvaccinated. Against VOCs, NAb response rates and geometric mean IC50 titers against B.1.617.2 (Delta) and B.1.1.529 (Omicron) were significantly lower for CoronaVac (50%, 23.2 and 7.1%, <20) than BNT162b2 (94.1%, 131 and 58.8%, 35.0), respectively. Three months after vaccinations, NAbs to VOCs dropped near to detection limit, along with waning memory T cell responses, mainly among CoronaVac-vaccinees. INTERPRETATION: Our results indicate that vaccinees especially CoronaVac-vaccinees with significantly reduced NAbs may probably face higher risk to pandemic VOCs breakthrough infection. Many viral diseases are highly contagious, and correlated with poor prognosis and great harm. Chinese medicine(CM) has played an important role in the prevention and treatment of viral diseases, including epidemic encephalitis B, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, viral hepatitis A, SARS, H1 N1 influenza and COVID-19, and performs better in improving symptoms, shorting the course of disease, delaying disease progression, increasing clinical cure rate and reducing mortality compared with symptomatic and supportive treatment alone. We retrospectively analyze the role of CM in the prevention and treatment of viral diseases, thus to provide reference for clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 is a public health emergency of international concern, which is characterised by rapid and widespread transmission, high mortality and complications. Several studies have shown the benefits of tai chi and qigong for recovery after COVID-19; however, no meta-analysis has been reported. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of tai chi and/or qigong on rehabilitation after COVID-19 through a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide a reference and basis for clinical application. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This study will use the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China Knowledge Network, China Biomedical Literature Database, Chinese Scientific Journal Database and Wanfang Database. The time period is from the inception of the database to November 2021, with no language restrictions. Searches will be conducted using the subject terms "Taichi","Qigong" and "COVID-19" plus free-text words. Articles will be screened and collected by two reviewers independently. Included studies will be assessed for quality using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tool. Statistical analyses will be performed using the Revman V.5.3 software. The primary outcomes include 1-second forced expiratory volume and 1-second forced vital capacity, oxygen saturation, total white cell count and quality of life score. Secondary outcomes include time to remission of major symptoms, incidence of adverse events, clinical cure rate and mortality. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses will also be used to explore and interpret the heterogeneity. This protocol is written based on the guideline of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Protocol. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval and consent are unnecessary because no primary data will be collected. The results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications. ABSTRACT

Importance: The increased hospital mortality rates from non-SARS-CoV-2 causes during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic are incompletely characterized. Objective: To describe changes in mortality rates after hospitalization for non-SARS-CoV-2 conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic and how mortality varies by characteristics of the admission and hospital. Design, Setting, and Participants: Retrospective cohort study from January 2019 through September 2021 using 100% of national Medicare claims, including 4626 US hospitals. Participants included 8 448 758 individuals with non-COVID-19 medical admissions with fee-for-service Medicare insurance. Main Outcomes and Measures: Outcome was mortality in the 30 days after admission with adjusted odds generated from a 3-level (admission, hospital, and county) logistic regression model that included diagnosis, demographic variables, comorbidities, hospital characteristics, and hospital prevalence of SARS-CoV-2. Results: There were 8 448 758 non-SARS-CoV-2 medical admissions in 2019 and from April 2020 to September 2021 (mean [SD] age, 73.66 [12.88] years; 52.82% women; 821 569 [11.87%] Black, 438 453 [6.34%] Hispanic, 5 351 956 [77.35%] White, and 307 218 [4.44%] categorized as other). Mortality in the 30 days after admission increased from 9.43% in 2019 to 11.48% from April 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021 (odds ratio [OR], 1.20; 95% CI, 1.19-1.21) in multilevel logistic regression analyses including admission and hospital characteristics. The increase in mortality was maintained throughout the first 18 months of the pandemic and varied by race and ethnicity (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.23-1.30 for Black enrollees; OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.23-1.27 for Hispanic enrollees; and OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.17-1.19 for White enrollees); Medicaid eligibility (OR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.24-1.27 for Medicaid eligible vs OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.16-1.18 for noneligible); and hospital quality score, measured on a scale of 1 to 5 stars with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.22-1.31 for 1 star vs OR, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.08-1.15 for 5 stars). Greater hospital prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was associated with greater increases in odds of death from the prepandemic period to the pandemic period; for example, comparing mortality in October through December 2020 with October through December 2019, the OR was 1.44 (95% CI, 1.39-1.49) for hospitals in the top quartile of SARS-CoV-2 admissions vs an OR of 1.19 (95% CI, 1.16-1.22) for admissions to hospitals in the lowest quartile. This association was mostly limited to admissions with high-severity diagnoses. Conclusions and Relevance: The prolonged elevation in mortality rates after hospital admission in 2020 and 2021 for non-SARS-CoV-2 diagnoses contrasts with reports of improvement in hospital mortality during 2020 for SARS-CoV-2. The results of this cohort study suggest that, with the continued impact of SARS-CoV-2, it is important to implement interventions to improve access to high-quality hospital care for those with non-SARS-CoV-2 diseases.

ABSTRACT

Purpose To investigate the impact of COVID-19 on the treatment of children with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).Methods We retrospectively collected and compared the data of patients with CDH admitted between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021 with the CDH patients admitted before the pandemic between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2019 (control group).Results During the pandemic, 41 patients with CDH diagnosed prenatally were transferred to our hospital, and 40 underwent surgical repair. The number of patients treated in our hospital increased by 24.2% compared with that before the pandemic. During the pandemic, the overall survival rate, postoperative survival rate and recurrence rate were 85.4%, 87.5% and 7.3%, respectively, and there were no significant differences compared with the control group. The average length of hospital stay in patients admitted during the pandemic was longer than that in the control group, and the incidence of nosocomial infection was higher than that in the control group.Conclusions CDH patients confirmed to be SARS-CoV-2 infection-free can receive routine treatment. Our data indicate that the implementation of protective measures during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with appropriate screening and case evaluation, do not have a negative impact on the prognosis of children.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In the context of the current pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, molecular detection is not limited to the clinical laboratory, but also faces the challenge of the complex and variable real-time detection fields. A series of novel coronavirus events were detected in the process of food cold chain packaging and transportation, making the application of molecular diagnosis in food processing, packaging, transportation, and other links urgent. There is an urgent need for a rapid detection technology that can adapt to the diversity and complexity of food safety. SCOPE AND APPROACH: This review introduces a new molecular diagnostic technology-biosensor analysis technology based on CRISPR-Cas12a. Systematic clarification of its development process and detection principles. It summarizes and systematically organizes its applications in viruses, food-borne pathogenic bacteria, small molecule detection, etc. In the past four years, which provides a brand-new and comprehensive solution for food detection. Finally, this article puts forward the challenges and the prospects for food safety. KEY FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS: The novel coronavirus hazards infiltrated every step of the food industry, from processing to packaging to transportation. The biosensor analytical technology based on CRISPR-Cas12a has great potential in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of infectious pathogens. CRISPR-Cas12a can effectively identify the presence of the specific nucleic acid targets and the small changes in sequences, which is particularly important for nucleic acid identification and pathogen detection. In addition, the CRISPR-Cas12a method can be adjusted and reconfigured within days to detect other viruses, providing equipment for nucleic acid diagnostics in the field of food safety. The future work will focus on the development of portable microfluidic devices for multiple detection. Shao et al. employed physical separation methods to separate Cas proteins in different microfluidic channels to achieve multiple detection, and each channel simultaneously detected different targets by adding crRNA with different spacer sequences. Although CRISPR-Cas12a technology has outstanding advantages in detection, there are several technical barriers in the transformation from emerging technologies to practical applications. The newly developed CRISPR-Cas12a-based applications and methods promote the development of numerous diagnostic and detection solutions, and have great potential in medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring, and especially food detection.
